Lake Taupo was created from a large volcanic explosion approximately 26,500 years ago and is considered to be dormant rather than extinct. Mt. Ngauruhoe, Mt Ruapehu and Mt Tongariro are at the southern end of Lake Taupo and are active volcanoes.
